Music Outback Education Programs
Meeting the Core Business of Remote Education

In 2003 over 250 Indigenous and non-Indigenous educators met in Alice Springs in order to identify the “Core Business” of remote Indigenous education. From this work a number of clear priorities emerged.

It was determined that remote Indigenous education should:

* Support literacy and numeracy learning
* Support local language and culture
* Encourage attendance at school
* Train Indigenous staff
* Build relationships between schools and their communities

Music Outback Foundation delivers its education programs to remote and isolated schools in up to 30 remote communities. With education outcomes in remote schools consistently much lower than mainstream standards, the program recognises that music has a high capacity to engage kids in school-based activities, offering a significant impact on education outcomes across the board.

Using innovative practices the education program successfully incorporates all five identified points of core business into its program content.

Music Outback education programs:

* Support literacy and numeracy by engaging children and adults in an intimate exploration of written language, via the writing of songs in both Indigenous first languages and English.
* Support local language and culture by engaging community members in the development of local stories into songs in local languages.
* Encourage attendance at school through the use and development of music as an education resource in general classroom activities, across a range of subject areas.
* Provide training and support for musically able community members to become musical mentors to children, leading to employment as tutors and instructors within community schools.
* Build relationships between schools and the community by attracting musically inclined community adults into the school to participate in music activities such as song-writing, concerts, and the production of recorded material.
